House in the country not yet habitable. Workers Martín and Rafael preparing to leave Friday afternoon when Martín calls me in to see our new visitor. After some little discussion of how they weren’t dangerous, Martín said they usually kill them just to be sure. I said let it be my guest for the weekend.
It’s a small one.

I was shocked a few times at how Uruguayos wanted to kill any visitor with more than 4 legs.Living with 3 assassins (los tres gatos), we rarely had any critters in the house for long. They killed frogs, snakes, insects, spiders, 1 hummingbird (oh, so sad to pick up its limp jeweled body) and kept the smaller mammals away.
You're so kind to allow house guests.
The fence guys killed a 3' snake–can't imagine it was doing any harm, but then I realized these guys work in the brush all the time, so maybe they know something I don't. As for birds, agreed about the little guys but if I get another chance, I will gleefully document the remains of one of those pretty and plaguish parrots ib the campo.
Granted, I prefer invited house guests….
