Why they call VW Beetles ‘fuscas’ in Uruguay remains a mystery to me.
You’ll see plenty of them around. The president of the country drives one.

The name “fusca” comes from the VW (name of the words in German). When the Germans came to Brazil, they started calling the little car Fauve, but Brazilians nicknamed it 'Fuscas' and as we Uruguayans have so many of these cars, that same name was “adopted” here. Hope your question is answered! Regards, Isa
Interesting – 'fow-vay' is 'VW' pronounced in German, but when I lived in Germany they called them 'Käfers.' So why would the Brazilians call them 'Fuscas?''Ofuscar' in Portuguese means to overshadow, obfuscate, outshine, dazzle, dim, blur. Hmmm. Ofusca – it dazzles, dims, blurs. Hmmm again 😉
Maybe because fusca means “beetle” in portuguese….
